Many New Projects

It has been a long time since anything was posted here on the blog.

Jay has been working nonstop on the creation of new pieces and running to shows here and there throughout the North East.

With the power outage in Connecticut over the past few weeks he decided that maybe I should take over running the blog and web work for him so that he can keep on working on the other side of things.

You know, the artistic stuff.

I'm his brother but I didn't get the artistic abilities that he did.
I do woodworking but far from the level and ability that Jay has.

I thought I would take a few moments and just post a few pictures of some of his new works here and I will come back and add information on each of the pieces later.

So for now lets have a look at some of the new items Jay has in process and some of the new finished pieces that are available for purchase and a few that have already been sold.

Custom Hand Carved Solid Burl Aroma Caster with hand Woven Vine Bottom to allow free flow of Air from the Bowls contents to the open air of the room surroundings. Custom Finger joints with alternating cuts from the Burl cause an interesting visual effect while increasing the strength of the finished piece. The finish is a Hand Rubbed 7 Layer Oil Finish.

More on the way

I have been neglecting this blog for a long time now and focusing my time on my art.

I will be returning over the next few days with posts and pictures of several of the projects that I have been working on over the past 2 years.

I have many new items that I think you will all enjoy.

Several items will be going on display through out the USA shortly.
I will be posting a schedule of dates and locations here as well.

I have a chance at writing some columns for woodworking magazines in the near future in the works as well.

The Herbie Project - an Effort to memorialize two lifetimes

I have been intrigued by an article I read yesterday in my local paper.

It told of a lifetime that has been spent in care of a tree. Not just any tree, but a tree that has spent 240 years towering over a small town in Maine.

Frank Knight has spent much of his time since the late 1950's caring for this tree. He helped to nurse it through 14 incursions with the Elm trees worst US threat. Dutch Elm's disease. Frank kept this tree alive and over the years it grew to a height of over 110 feet. A height that has allowed this town and it's residents to call it the "Largest Elm tree in New England"

Over those years, Frank became close with this tree and gave it a name. "Herbie" The name has stuck. The residents of Yarmouth Maine refer to this tree by name.

Just the history of this tree compels me to find a way to memorialize it. Not just the tree but the connection between Mr. Knight and the tree known as "Herbie"

On January 18, 2010 the largest Elm tree in New England will be cut down. It has lost the fight with Dutch elm disease.

I have had contact with the town offices in Yarmouth and plan to be involved in the "Herbie Project". What I will be able to create from this Elm that predates our nations birth depends on what I can see from within. I am looking to take a trip to Yarmouth in the next few days to view the tree in the natural setting prior to the saws starting the work of removing "Herbie".

I want to make a memorial piece from this tree that will capture the connection between Frank, "Herbie" and the town of Yarmouth.

Political Life: The Head on a platter sculpture

In life, you risk your public face every now and again.
In political life, your public face is the first thing your opponent wants to exploit.

The Republicans want the Democrats and the Democrats want the Republicans to end up on a platter with an apple stuffed in his or her mouth, served up by the media for the voting public to see in the full undignified repugnance that will win votes for there side of the political universe. Allowing them to wield the power of a nation by request of the angered public.

This was another enjoyable piece to create. It is fit together like a puzzle and as with all of my work it is finished with a hand rubbed oil and buffed to a high sheen by using a mixture of Bee and Carnauba wax.

Nice Dreams

This piece was finished a while back. I will post more information on it a bit later. For now just have a look at some of the pictures.

It is the story of a cat and it's dream of flight.

This was a fun piece to work on. The top is a book-match from a solid burl.

The Seahorse the process continues

After the initial rough out work was completed with an electric chain saw and a grinder it was time to move on to the second and much more time consuming non power hand tool work.

I use several different chisels and carving tools to do the fine and detailing work in my pieces.

I also use sand paper. A whole lot of sand paper.

The devil is in the details on this little guy. Hours and hours of detail work to be honest.

I still have more detailing and sanding to go before starting to apply the oil to the Seahorse.
